The European Union's (EU) Machinery & Low Voltage Directives Supporting CE Mark
EU Low Voltage Directive (LVD) and Machinery Directive (MD) are legal documents that create uniform requirements and regulations for the sale of electrical equipment and machinery in the European Union.
The Low Voltage Directive (LVD)
Ensures that electrical equipment within certain voltage limits provides a high level of protection for European citizens this applies to electrical equipment with a voltage rating of 50–1,000 V for alternating current and 75–1,500 V for direct current. Manufacturers and distributors must certify that their products comply with the LVD. We can help you obtain the approvals needed to apply a CE Mark that allows your product to be sold anywhere in the EU and European Economic Area (EEA) .
Machinery Directive (MD)
Allows for the free movement of machinery within the EU market and applies to machinery with a drive system powered by energy other than human and/or animal. All manufacturers must issue a Declaration of Conformity (DoC) in order to sell their products in the EU. Most machinery can be self-certified by the manufacturer, but Annex IV machines require special procedures. The Essential Health & Safety Requirements of the Machinery Directive are comprehensive and require compliance with other applicable European Directives such as the Low Voltage Directive.
